It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
