It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
