It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
