week calendar template word
It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
