It might seem like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
