weekly calendar 2019 template
It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
