It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
