It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
