It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
