It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
