It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
