It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
