It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
