It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
