It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
