It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
