It might seem like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
