It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
