It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
