It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
