It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
