It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
