It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
