It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
