It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
