It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
