It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
