It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
