It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
