It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
