It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
