It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
