It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
