It might seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
