It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
