It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
