It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
