It may look to be an easy step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
